NINETY-THREE students have been selected for the 2005 Madhvani Foundation Scholarship Award. This followed a rigorous exercise by a scholarship committee that had to sieve through 1,135 applications to come up with the figure.
A press release from the foundation said 156 undergraduate students and 44 postgraduate students had made it to the final shortlist before the committee arrived at the 93 after interviews.
The press release shows that about sh257m will be spent on funding the studies of 83 undergraduate students and sh34m will go towards funding 10 postgraduate students.
The foundation will this year spend sh424m on the scholarships that now benefit 213 students.
The successful candidates were selected from across the country, with special attention to the war-torn northern region and due consideration given to gender equality. The candidates who applied were from Makerere University, Makerere University Business School Nakawa, Busoga, Kampala International University, Nkumba, Kyambogo, Uganda Christian University and Mbarara University.
The number of applicants for the Madhvani Foundation Scholarship Award is growing over the years. In 2004, 498 applications were received.
Hardly a year later, the number has grown to over 1,000. This followed a massive campaign to get as many deserving students as possible to apply, the release said.
“The purpose of the scholarship is to facilitate students pursuing scientific and technical education in tertiary institutions,” reads the press release.
