Arua doctor wins Lukwiya Award

Makerere University Institute of Public Health (MUIPH) has chosen Dr. George Didi Bhoka from Arua Hospital for this year’s Dr. Matthew Lukwiya Award.

Makerere University Institute of Public Health (MUIPH) has chosen Dr. George Didi Bhoka from Arua Hospital for this year’s Dr. Matthew Lukwiya Award.
Lukwiya was the head of Lacor Hospital in Gulu when an Ebola epidemic struck during 2000. He died of the viral disease while treating the patients, after many other medical personnel were either overwhelmed by the number of patients or were reluctant to risk their lives in treating the patients.
MUIPH, in collaboration with the US government, gives the US$1,000 Lukwiya Award and a plaque annually to fellows of the institute who show outstanding leadership in their professional responsibilities during their apprenticeship to a host medical organisation.
MUIPH recognised Bhoka for supporting the district HIV/AIDS committees, health care workers, religious and political leaders and community members in West Nile in implementing a broad range of anti-AIDS activities and strategies.
Makerere vice-chancellor Prof. Livingstone Luboobi handed over the award to Dr. Bhoka during the MUIPH grant and certificate award ceremony at the Grand Imperial Hotel, Kampala on Friday.
“Dr. Bhoka notably strengthened the capacity of district committees in Yumbe, Lira, and Arua to review and update their plans and perform data quality audit exercises,†Luboobi said.
“He actively participated in training and sensitising close to 2,000 stakeholders in diverse and cross-cutting aspects of prevention, care and treatment, Septrin prophylaxis policy implementation, and TB/HIV co-infection and palliative care,†he added.
MUIPH deputy director Dr. William Bazeyo urged the alumni of the institute not to go for jobs basically for money but to go for employment that seeks to improve the livelihood of the community by offering vital services selflessly.
