THE number of aspirants who have picked forms to contest for the presidency yesterday hit a record 34.

THE number of aspirants who have picked forms to contest for the presidency yesterday hit a record 34.

The principal elections officer in charge of issuing the forms, Charles Lubwama, confirmed that 34 people had by close of business yesterday picked forms.

He said of them, 28 were official sponsored candidates of political parties, while six were standing as independents.

Electoral Commission (EC) spokesman Okello Jabweli said besides NRM’s Yoweri Museveni, Ssebaana Kizito had picked for DP, UPC’s Miria Obote, JEEMA and many other new parties had picked forms.

Among those who picked forms as independents are DP fall-out Hajji Nasser Ssebaggala, who vowed to stand as an independent after losing the party ticket to Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito.

Others are comedian Bush Ainebyona, alias Vicks Kingo, Ben Sseninde, Abeid Bwanika, Mwambazi Kajura and Musa Lukwago.

According to the Presidential Elections Act, nomination of candidates may be done by a registered political party sponsoring a candidate or by a candidate standing as an independent.

The nomination should be supported by not less than 100 voters from at least two-thirds of all districts of Uganda.

On how soon they should return the forms, Lubwama said, “There is no deadline. They have to bring back the list of supporters early, because we need to verify their authenticity, which is an enormous task,” he said.
Jabweli said in accordance with the Act, each of the nominated candidates would be entitled to monetary assistance of a sum of not less than 100 currency points, about sh20m.

Other entitlements of candidates will be vehicles, protection and security.
