THE Police director of operations, Francis Rwego, has asked regional and district Police commanders to ensure that next year’s general elections are conducted in a secure environment.

Rwego said on Saturday that the credibility of an election process was largely measured by the kind of environment that prevails.

Rwego was presenting a paper entitled “Strategy for policing forth coming elections.” This was at a workshop for regional and district Police commanders at Hotel Africana in Kampala. The workshop is held annually to lay the Force’s strategies.

The Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, attended the workshop, whose theme was “To provide a secure environment for the forth coming political transition through a coordinated approach with all stakeholders.”

“The Uganda Police Force is constitutionally charged with the responsibility of internal security in the country and therefore, it has a challenge to provide security for the elections,” Rwego said.

Kayihura cautioned Police commanders against drinking in public, saying they risked becoming a nuisance.

He urged them to fight sectarianism, gambling and rumour mongering so that they can execute their duties as a team, with a free and open mind. He thanked the Police for fighting serious crime, which he said had reduced tremendously.

Kayihura said junior officers needed guidance from their seniors for effective performance.
