THE East African Parliament is to pass a new standards law to rid the region of counterfeits and substandard products.

Terry Kahuma, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) chief, said this week that the Standards, Quality Assurance, Metrology and Testing law would be ratified early next year.

“It will help the three East African countries to use a mutual method to ensure safety and fairness in all products coming into the region,” Kahuma said at the opening of the UNBS Quality Week at the Constitutional Square in Kampala.

He said measuring and testing products would be be harmonised in the region.

Kahuma said this would help the business community and manufacturers.

Kahuma encouraged local manufacturers to acquire the UNBS Quality Mark to enable effective trade across borders.

“The Quality Mark will enable traders to go beyond borders because whatever is certified will be accepted in the other two countries while whatever is banned will be rejected in other countries,” he said.

Kahuma said UNBS certified products would not be subjected to testing at the borders, saving manufacturers time and money.

He, however, said quality was not only for cross border trade but for internal trade. He urged traders and manufacturers to constantly deliver quality products.

“Do everything to make sure that your products do not fall below quality standards. UNBS will be more vigilant in fighting substandard products,” Kahuma said.
