THE Chancellor Makerere University has instructed the education minister to amend the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 in order to address the dispute between the university and Makerere University Business School (MUBS).

Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, also the Prime Minister, while presiding over the 3rd graduation ceremony of MUBS, urged the heads of the two institutions to amicably resolve the matter and ensure that students do not become victims of the dispute.

He awarded diplomas and certificates to 1,399 students who qualified in different disciplines.

The principle of the school Assoc. Prof. Wasswa Balunywa, said the graduation was the epitome of the activities of the university.

The function, held at the MUBS campus yesterday, was attended by education minister Namirembe Bitamazire, Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Livingstone Luboobi and chairman MUBS Council Dr. Colin Sentongo.

Nsibambi, said, “There have been disagreements between the two institutions, I must appeal to the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University and the Principal MUBS to ensure that students do not become victims of the misunderstandings between the two institutions.”

The Premier also warned students against riots. “Students are urged to use organs of the university where they are represented to sort out their grievances.

Students who indulge in acts of hooliganism in universities and tertiary institutions like MUBS will be stiffly punished,” he said.

Balunywa said the school had grown from two undergraduate programmes in 1998 to 36.

“These programmes are developed in response to market demands.

They are crafted from the analysis of the industry and the competence of the school,” he said.
