Zabasaja tops inaugural Mulago championship

FIDE Master Willy Zabasaja lived up to his international status, winning all five rounds to lead the inaugural Mulago National Chess Championship at Lugogo NCS headquarters over the weekend.

FIDE Master Willy Zabasaja lived up to his international status, winning all five rounds to lead the inaugural Mulago National Chess Championship at Lugogo NCS headquarters over the weekend.

Veteran Zabasaja, Uganda’s highest rated player, defeated Andrew Walakira, Brian Mugabi, Farouk Fauza, Harold Wanyama and former national champion Hassan Mulambe to get on course for a sh0.5m top prize.

The 10-round tournament sponsored by Mulago Chess Club resumes for another round on Friday.

Pre-tournament favourite Stephen Kawuma drew with Grace Nsubuga and 19-year-old Mike Akabo to share second position with six others on four points.

Walter Okas, Shadrack Kantinti, Simon Iga, Hassan Mulambe, Farouk Fauza and Harold Wanyama have four points a piece.

Bob Bibasa and Geoffrey Kanduho have 3.5 points each in the tournament that has attracted 182 competitors from 16 clubs.

Meanwhile, Muke Bright swept all seven rounds to win the Kyambogo Chess Challenge at Kyambogo University on Sunday.

Muke beat Wilfred Higenyi in the closing round to snatch his seventh point, finishing 1.5 points clear of second placed Patrick Akena.

Edgar Lemiriga (five points) beat Phillip Mwondha on tie-break to claim third place.

Joan Butindo won the women category.

The tournament organised by Julius Anwar and sponsored by Kyambogo University attracted 25 competitors.
