THE education ministry has donated 724 science kits to 122 secondary schools which have been affected by the LRA insurgency in the north.

The kits, worth sh750m, contain laboratory equipment like hand lenses, microscopes, test tubes, electric bells, barometers, clocks and weights.

Each school received three kits that must be collected within two weeks.

Handing over the kits at the ministry’s stores in Kampala on Friday, the state minister for higher education, Simon Mayende, warned headteachers against storing science equipment for fear of misuse.

“There are those who keep textbooks and apparatus material away without ever touching them for fear of misuse. But doing this would be as good as not having them altogether. They must be put to full use for the benefit of the students,” he said.

Mayende said by keeping the equipment away, the headteachers discouraged students from taking science subjects.

“Students ultimately withdraw from the classes if such important tools are lacking. As much as we don’t want equipment stolen or smuggled, misplaced and mishandled, it must be put to purpose,” he said.

Mayende was accompanied by the commissioner of secondary education, Yusuf Nsubuga.
