Speed governors for taxis will be enforced starting in February, the chairman of the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association has said.

John Ndyomugyenyi said during an interview on Tuesday that, “Today, along with the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, we launched traffic safety gadgets like speed guns at the Constitutional Square.

The gadgets were provided by the Road Agency Formation Unit. We toured the new and old taxi parks to ensure compliance.”

Ndyomugyenyi said taxi operators are not allowed to load passengers if the cars lack seat belts or safety tyres.
The speed governors are already mandatory for buses.

Speeding and lack of discipline in the form of disregarding safety measures like avoiding over-loading passengers are responsible for the high rate of accidents in the country.

The accidents become worse during the festival season because more people travel and the operators try to get quick cash by over-loading and speeding. There has been more inspection for the speed governors over the last week, leading to grounding of several vehicles.
