Fresh news on the local music scene, is, Sweden-based Ugandan singer Jacqueline Nakiri Mbabazi has been nominated for the Swedish equivalent of the Grammy Awards. Bravo!

Apparently, Sweden’s music panel handling the awards, think Nakiri is one of the artistes worth the Best Soul/hip hop artiste Award of the year. She is up against Masaya, another Ugandan crooner who is doing well in Sweden and Timbukutu, a Swedish artiste. Who will take the crown? We will only get to know after February 7, 2006.

Nakiri, now in Uganda, recently proved that she can rock Ugandans at a concert, just as well as she does to the Europeans.

The husky-voiced crooner ‘stole’ the show from other local pop artistes who performed at the Wine Garage in Muyenga recently.

Nakiri kicked off the show at about 7:00pm, with her hit song Karma. The song is a sensual mix of hip-hop and soul. But what sent many of the guests gyrating in their seats was the drastic dance-beat in the song.

Nothing like the disco garbage (Kidaandali) that we were accustomed to from the local pop singers here! Little wonder then, that hundreds of people bought her debut album Blaqalixious. The album will be launched in Europe soon. The video was shot here last weekend.

Nakiri’s debut album also includes The way you make me feel, which catapulted up the MTV charts a few weeks ago. Karma is already playing on some FM radios and nightclubs around Kampala.
