THE Uganda Revenue Authority on Thursday incinerated 18 million sticks (3,665 cartons) of smuggled cigarettes worth about sh500m in Kirinya Prisons in Jinja.
The cigarettes would have attracted sh725m in taxes if they had been legally imported.
Patrick Mukiibi, URA’s assistant commissioner for corporate and public affairs, said the cigarettes, which were gathered from June to December came from Kenya and DR Congo.
“The cigarettes that had forged Uganda stamps were impounded in Kampala, Mayuge, Mbale, Malaba and West Nile,” Mukiibi said.
He asked the public to cooperate by giving tip-offs to the tax body to help it wipe out the vice, which creates an unlevelled playing field for businesses.
