Uganda People’s congress (UPC) presidential candidate Mama Miria Kalule Obote has said her government will disband internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camps if she wins the 2006 elections.
“My government would not want to see more IDP camps existing, we are tired of war mongers and we ought to educate our children,” Miria said.
Miria rubbished claims by some Lango MPs that President Yoweri Museveni’s government financed the UPC delegates’ conference.
“I hear some MPs trying to confuse you that we got funding from Museveni’s government to organise the UPC delegates’ conference. This is an absolute lie and propaganda.
“Other people are saying Museveni plotted me to divide the votes in Lango to pave way for Sam Engola to sail through. Do you think I am crazy or mad to accept the opposition to finance my party conference? How can museveni finance a UPC conference?” Miria asked.
Addressing a rally at the Coronation Park in Lira Municipality on Saturday, Miria said this Christmas season and the beginning of the new year should mark the rebirth of UPC and the new year resolution should be to win the elections.
“UPC is still strong and alive. We in the UPC have never run out of ideas because of the party vision. Vote UPC in the 2006 elections so that you are bailed out of your problems,” Miria said.
She challenged women to wake up and show the world that they are peace makers and can do better in governing a society.
“Women are the ones who suffer a lot during or after an election. Let us wake up and challenge men. We have lost the cooperative societies that used to support us (women).
“I have spelt out clearly in my manifesto, plans to help women come out of poverty and my government would make it a priority,” Miria said, adding, “I am now remarried to UPC. Your first job is to make sure UPC wins in the coming election.”
Miria was accompanied by her adviser and Lira Woman MP, Margaret Ateng Otim, son Jimmy Akena and Adoko Nekyon.
Earlier, Nekyon attacked Museveni’s NRM government for plundering the DR Congo wealth.
“Some of the aspirants will come here and deceive you with the money they stole from Congo and Sudan to bribe you. Get the money and eat but vote wisely,” Nekyon said.
