THE Mukono diocese Bishop, the Rev. Paul Luzinda, has urged the government to lead by example and reconcile with its political opponents to guarantee peace ahead of the 2006 general elections.

“There should always be room for reconciliation and love even for those categorised as unlovable.

This should start with the high authorities and spread downwards,” he said.

In his Christmas message delivered at St. Peter’s and St. Andrew’s cathedrals on Sunday, Luzinda said Jesus Christ’ birth brought peace and urged Christians to condemn hatred, intrigue and grudges.

His remarks come in the wake of unrest caused by the arrest and detention of Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Luzinda said the coming of Jesus Christ is reconciliatory, adding that the saviour, an instrument of peace, commands “love each other as I have loved you”.

He urged Christians to pray that security prevails in Uganda and pleaded with them to be instruments of peace during and after the elections.

“We are tired of wars and violence. They are nasty occurrences. A repeat of a conflict-dented history is undesirable,” he said.
