THE Electoral commission is to conduct elections for the mayor of Kampala, the commission secretary has said.

Sam Rwakoojo said since the law granting Kampala a special status in not yet in place, they could only operate by the existing law that provides for a mayor.

“There is no law giving Kampala a special status yet. We can only work within the existing law. In the Local Government Act, Kampala is not treated any separate from other districts,” he said.

He said the commission has been asking for the law granting Kampala a special status to no avail.

“We have been asking for it, we have not managed to get it,” he said.

Rwakoojo said several candidates had picked nomination forms for the position and nominations for mayors and district chairmen take place today and tomorrow.

He said if the Kampala mayor cannot be elected, they would have to put a special provision in place.
