GULU Municipality MP Norbert Mao has said he is to contest for the Gulu LC5 chairmanship and uproot the incumbent, Col. Walter Ochora, in the 2006 general elections.
Mao, who is the leader of the Democratic Party’s (DP) presidential candidate, John Ssebaana-Kizito’s campaign team, told a crowd at the Kaunda Grounds in a late evening campaign on Tuesday he would only occupy the Gulu seat for one term and quit.
Mao said the LC5 seat would only keep him in active politics and help to sell him more, to sharpen him for the presidential race in the 2011 general elections.
“I am not a prostitute in politics as some people might think. I am still very young, but a senior to most of my people in the north. I am now second after Ssebaana Kizito in the DP family as proved by the elections held at Namboole stadium. So, I appeal to you my people that you rally behind me and we uproot the jiggers of the NRM from the district,” he said.
“I had not wanted to contest for any seat after I was honestly defeated for the DP presidency by Ssebaana during the DP delegates meeting,” he said.
Mao, however, expressed fears that due to his commitment as Ssebaana’s campaign manager, he would not have enough time to conduct his campaigns.
He said the people should be ready to work with his campaign team to canvass for votes for him.
