THE Attorney General (AG) has submitted documents in court alleging that jailed Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Kizza Besigye (below) was arrested for fear that he would again sneak out of the country.
Security information filed in the High Court alleges that Besigye, who returned to Uganda in October aboard a Kenya Airways flight, was scheduled to go back to South Africa on November 17.
“The subject (Besigye) had a confirmed return ticket bought from South Africa and was, therefore, supposed to travel on Thursday, November 17, 2005 aboard Kenya Airways, flight KQ 413.
“The booking is KQ 413 from Entebbe at 1505hrs to arrive in Nairobi at 1620hrs and KQ 462 from Nairobi at 2030hrs to arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa at 2030hrs,” read the security statement. Attached on the security statement was a routing obtained from Kenya Airways offices.
The statement further warned that there was need to monitor other members of FDC who are likely to run away or travel to various countries on FDC business.
Maj. Kagoro Asingura, in an affidavit, confirmed the report, saying, “I know that on August 17, 2001, Besigye fled from Uganda through unauthorised exit points. He also intended to go out of Uganda on or around November 17.”
