An inmate at Kirinya Prison in Jinja was on Tuesday killed after a mob descended on him with blunt objects.
Daniel Ikonot had earlier escaped from custody, seeking sanctuary at Masese slums in Jinja.
The Police said a warder who wanted to re-arrest Ikonot incited the mob, who took action after he declared Ikonot a thief.
The officer in charge of crime, Grant Tabo, said Ikonot was serving a two-year year jail term after the High Court convicted him of defilement.
