ACTING National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary Justine Ligyalingi will not apply to get the job on a permanent basis, but forty other people would love to.

NCS confirmed yesterday that over forty persons had applied for the vacant posts of general secretary and assistant general secretary administration.

But Council has shelved their powers to shortlist the successfull applicants since they advertised the vacancy in November.

The general secretary’s post fell vacant last year when Abbey Lutaya was forced to resign while his former administration assistant John Odyek is over retirement age. He is serving a one-year contract, which ends mid this year.

Justine Ligyalingi, who to many looked to have been groomed to a true sports administrator by Abbey Lutaya yesterday said that he had not applied for the job.

“I was far below the age limit. I am 33 and they want people over 40 years,” he said. “I cannot apply for the assistant general secretary administration because we are at the same level. By the time the advert was made, I had already started my master’s programme which requires more time and there is no way I can combine those two responsibilities and do them effectively.”

Ligyalingi also revealed that council had written to the necessary authorities to help them with the recruitment.

“We have written to the permanent secretary in both ministry of education and sports and Public Service to constitute a committee that will short list the applicants and take on all the other following steps. We wanted to become more professional and eliminate accusations of being biased. I think a neutral body will be instituted.”

Ligyalingi could not say when the interviews will start, but said that it will be as soon as the committee finalises with looking through applications.
