BUSHENYI Woman MP Bernadette Bigirwa has died.

Bigirwa, the chairperson of the parliamentary standing committee on government assurances, died yesterday afternoon at Mbarara University Hospital where she was admitted last week.

Also dead is the husband of the state minister for water, Maria Mutagamba, Mr. Tarsis Mutagamba. Details about the death were still sketchy by press time.

The Clerk to Parliament, A. M. Tandekwire, announced Bigirwa’s death in a statement yesterday. The MP was wife to Jack Bigirwa.

Tandekwire said burial arrangements would be announced later. “May the soul of Bernadette Bigirwa rest in eternal peace,” he said.

A family member said earlier in the week that Bigirwa, 46, was in comma following an attack of pneumonia.

“We have lost a very active, useful MP,” Loice Bwambale, chairperson of the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association (UWOPA), said.

Bigirwa has been in Parliament since 1996. Before then, she served as a district administrator (DA) in Kasese and Rukungiri and as a Resident District Commissioner in Jinja.

She also worked in the Ministry of Labour in the 1980s.
