KAKIRA Sugar Works (KSW) produced 87,296 metric tonnes of sugar last year, which is a 16% rise

KAKIRA Sugar Works (KSW) produced 87,296 metric tonnes of sugar last year, which is a 16% rise, reports Abubaker Mukose.

During 2003, there were 12,028 more tonnes of sugar produced compared to 2002.

“This achievement has been realised because of good weather for sugar cane growing, good response from the out-growers, professional management, a dedicated work force and the management’s timely decision to continue to expand capacity,” S.K Iyengar, the company's secretary said in a statement recently.

He said the out-growers supplied 497,330 tonnes of sugarcane representing 51% of total cane milled.

Iyengar said the company has maintained its position as the leading domestic sugar producer.
He said plans to have a steady increase in sugar production are underway.

Iyengar said KSW will produce 50,000 tonnes per annum over the next three to four years.
