MAKERERE University has received over 40,000 applicants for the academic year 2004/05. All the applicants are senior six leavers competing for the 4,000 government scholarships.

University officials said the admission exercise had started to avoid the usual hassle that follows results release. Of the 4,000 government scholarships, 2,795 will go to Makerere University, 1,000 to Kyambogo and the rest will be shared out between Mbarara and Gulu universities, officials said.

Admission remains on merit, an official said. A source said, “I don’t think it will be possible to admit by the quota system because by this time we would have received communication from the ministry of Education.”

Deputy Academic Registrar Eliasha Obela said, “We are already sorting out the applications. There is increased demand for university education. Even those who fail to get state scholarships insist on paying. This is an indicator that the people are doing very well,” he said.

About 54,000 candidates sat A’levels last year.

“In 2002, 53,000 sat the examination and 28,895 had the minimum qualification for university admission but (we) could not accommodate them,” he said.

Obella said over 10,000 students would be admitted on the private sponsorship scheme.

He said entrants for diploma courses and for long distance education have already been admitted.
