What’s the fuss about sex workers?

Sir — I have been following keenly the cumulative level of the comprehension of Ugandans on certain social matters; among them is the issue of legalising sex workers in Uganda. I have in the past been naïve with my cultural tendencies, just like all the others that have expressed their opinion this matter. It is well known that prostitution exists in every one of us, regardless of how we refer to this primitive instinct found in mankind and animals. In Kampala alone, there are prostitutes on all corners of the street. unfortunately, when we talk about prostitution every mind begins raving about the poor African woman, yet men make up the majority of prostitutes on earth. So why does this argument target the women? Who says there are no male sex workers? In fact, to refer to those who peddle sex for monetary gain as sex workers is actually using professional language. It is therefore imperative that we give deeper thought to the consequences of legalising prostitution in Uganda. If we hope to get into the tourism industry we must understand that one major natural drive that governs man’s mind is sex. In America and Europe where people work so much, when they decide to take a vacation from home, their main places of choice are places where where women and men are readily available for sex. Be assured that very few Americans, Canadians or Europeans are interested in seeing your malnourished baboons and mountain terrain, unless they are researchers. it has been proved through research that commercial sex workers are the least affected by AIDS because they know the nature of their business and the risks involved. sex workers tend to be very cautious in their trade. Even those who take the risk to pay for these services tend to be careful and are aware of the fact that they share these women with a horde of other clients. I have written this research report before in many of the small projects that we initiated at the Uganda National Students’ Association. Remember I am referring to commercial sex workers. Commercial sex automatically raises the tax base as it attracts extra foreign currency from tourists who may have a variety of items to spend their money on. Do you wonder why the Bahamas, Hawaii etc are very popular tourists spots? the reasons is sex, comfort and luxury. I think Dr Sylvia Tamale is ahead of us all.
