The Centre for Disease Control of the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) has opened a plague study laboratory at the Weatherhead Park lane at Anyafio in Arua municipality.
The centre, formerly a UVRI field station, was reconstructed at over sh80m.
Officiating at the handover ceremony recently, the acting director, Dr. Miph Musoke, said the laboratory would diagnose various illnesses.
“This center is going to get close ties with many medical institutions.
“It will in future become a rapid diagnostic centre,” Musoke said.
He said the centre would serve all the five districts of the West Nile, but would start with Vurra and Okoro counties in Arua and Nebbi districts respectively, where plague cases are rampant.
Arua district health and environment committee chairman Sabo Kamilo said plagues killed 8 pupils in the district between 2002 and 2003.
