SECURITY operatives in Bugiri district have impounded immature fish worth eight million shillings from traders.
The fish were seized in an operation mounted by personnel from Maritimu Security Organisation which was deployed to fight illegal fishing in Busoga.
The commander of the organisation, Lt. Herbert Matovu, said the fish was impounded last week at Wakawaka Landing Site in Bugiri.
Matovu said it was loaded on three trucks. He said the vehicle with registration number UAE 850N was heading to Tororo, UAD 783Z was heading to Bugiri town while vehicle UCN 330 was destined for Mbale.
He said the culprits and their goods were handed over to Bugiri district police commander Patrick Mugizi.
Matovu said some police officers frustrate his work by releasing the criminals.
He said in future they will consider burning the impounded goods or sending them to the fisheries centre in Entebbe.
Bugiri fisheries officer Fred Higoma said the law allows first time offenders to be warned and released but habitual criminals are punished.
