The army yesterday said it had killed the LRA army commander, Yadin Tolbert Nyeko, in a battle in Kitgum, report Hellen Mukiibi and Dennis Ojwee.

“At midday today we recorded another success in our operations against Kony. Our 93rd and 37th infantry battalions with air support killed 15 rebels including Nyeko,” Lt. Chris Magezi of the 5th Division said on phone from Lira.

By press time, he said the fighting was continuing south of Atanga. Magezi, quoting preliminary reports, said the dead also included “Capt.” Omara of the Lord’s Resistance Army.

He said the UPDF captured three rebels including a captain who has been Nyeko’s aide while 27 people were rescued.

Also recovered at the battle scene were six SMGs and two walkie talkies, among other equipment.

On Sunday, the army recovered a pair of military pips suspected to belong to LRA commander Dominic Ogwen in an evening battle north of Wii-Lacic in Nwoya county, west of Gulu town.

Four LRA rebels were reportedly killed in a joint UPDF helicopter and infantry attack.

The northern Uganda army spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said four LRA fighters surrendered, one of whom included an LRA sergeant identified as Walter Watmon.

He said the army attacked a splinter group of the LRA on Sunday evening using the UPDF helicopter and an infantry force killing three LRA fighters on spot.

He said the army recovered one sub-machine gun and 202 bullets. Meanwhile, Ankunda said the B Battalion on Sunday killed one LRA fighter within Koch Ongako that was led by commander Dominic Ongwen.

He said the UPDF battalion recovered three sub-machine guns, a pair of LRA pips and one land mine belonging to a lieutenant colonel.

“The commander, “Lt. Col.” Dominic Ongwen, is reportedly on the run, Ankunda said.
