THE executive director of the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA, Dr. Maggie Kigozi, has asked the Inspector General of Police to investigate allegations of unprofessional methods used in the hides and skins sector.
Kigozi said UIA got complaints from a UK investor that other competitors are using ruthless methods of competing for the hides and skins.
The UK based East Hides, an international dealer in hides and skins who had plans to set up an abattoir has already withdrawn until investigations are carried out.
“These complaints and other issues related to the leather sector were discussed with the minister of state for investment Sam Kutesa and His Excellency the President at separate meetings held on July 23, 2003,” she said in a letter dated December 23, 2003.
Kigozi said leather is a very valuable commodity and a potential high export earner.
She said the Government is doing everything possible to make the sector vibrant.
