THE Ugandan U-19 team will this week set up camp in the land of legends Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar ahead of the 2004 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup.

The team will acclimatise in India before connecting to Bangladesh for the international Cricket Council (ICC) youth World Cup February 15 to march 5.

Sixteen teams will take part in the 2004 tournament – the 10 ICC Full Member countries plus Canada, Ireland, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Scotland and Uganda.

The Indian High Commissioner Deepak Ray saw the team off at Lugogo yesterday.

The Shell sponsored team, the first national Ugandan team to make it to a World Cup proper, was hosted to a send-off luncheon at Lugogo attended by senior Presidential Advisor on Mass Media John Nagenda, Shell country chairman Ivan Kyayonka and former NCS boss Abbey Lutaya.

“You have made every Ugandan proud, play to win and make sure you display a good level of discipline and smartness throughout the tournament,” Nagenda said.

The former national captain handed $500 to the players as pocket money on their maiden tour of India while MTN Sales and Sponsorship manager Aggrey Kagonyera handed over a kit bag to each of the 16 players.

Uganda is grouped with South Africa, England and Nepal in the qualifying round. Australia are defending youth champions.

Shell country manager Kyayonka revealed that his company was proud to be the official sponsor of the first ever Ugandan team to play at the World Cup.

“Carry the national flag high because you have the support of Shell. Come back with the trophy and you will have done us proud,” said Kyayonka who hailed the transparency and good accountability of UCA’s managers.

“We (UCA) are grateful to all our sponsors for boosting this noble cause at short notice,” a jovial UCA chairman Latimer Mukasa said.

The Indian High Commissioner said it would be a pleasure to see Uganda play against India in the final and the Indian community in Uganda promised to cheer the youngsters all the way. The team will leave India for Bangladesh February 9.
