Luweero Police on Tuesday stormed the bedroom of a man who on Sunday wedded a 14-year-old girl and arrested both the bride and the groom, cutting short their two-day honeymoon.
The incident took place at around 2:00am in Buttanswa village near Luweero town.
The groom, Alamanzan Nkugwa, a peasant in Buttanswa, on Sunday officially married the girl with her parents’ consent.
Luweero district Police commander Okello Makmot said the bride was a primary six pupil at Butuntumula UMEA P/S in Katikamu. He said they wanted the groom charged with defilement.
Family members said the bride (name withheld), had dropped out of school last year and her parents resolved to marry her off, saying she was a slow learner.
The wedding ceremony was presided over by Muslim religious leaders in Butuntumula sub-county and took place at the home of the girl’s father at Kibikke village.
It was attended by over 300 people including area councillors.
Amid traditional and disco music, the girl’s father Buruhan Balintuumye told the gathering that he had consented to the marriage of his daughter with Nkugwa, who has three wives.
This was after Nkugwa and his entourage who travelled by a taxi, paid dowry of sh10,000 and a few presents in form of items and cash.
Nkugwa and his entourage left with the bride the same day at around 11:30pm and headed for his home, from where they were arrested. Makmot said the Police were still investigating.
