THE 2003 Ordinary and Advanced level examinations are to be released by February 10, according to the timetable issued by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

The document also details the 2004 school calendar, with a stern warning to schools that will not adhere to the official dates.

The calendar shows that the first term, which opened on Monday, will close on April 30, while the second term commences on May 17 and will run up to August 20. The third term opens on September 6 and closes on December 3, 2004.

“This calendar must be complied with by all educational institutions (government and private) and may only be varied after obtaining written permission on an individual basis from the permanent secretary on the recommendation of the director of education,” the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Francis Lubanga, warned.

The calendar also showed that the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) should have marked, processed and released, by February 10, the 2003 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), the junior technical examinations as well as the ‘O’ and ‘A’ level examination results.

UNEB spokesperson, Eva Konde, was optimistic they would beat the deadline.
She was, however, non-committal on the exact dates the ‘O’ and ‘A’ level results would be out. PLE was released on January 22.

“We have finished the marking, but we are still doing the mop-up; checking and answering any queries. I am optimistic we shall beat the deadline,” Konde said on Tuesday.

The ministry’s target is to ensure the results are released early enough for the S1 and S5 students to start studies with the rest of the students. There has always been a three to four weeks delay in reporting by the new students. The delay was reduced to one week for S1s this year.

According to the calendar, primary teacher colleges will open for the first term on May 17 - August 20, while the second term will run from September 6 to December 3. The third term commences on January 27 till April 24, 2005.

Technical and vocational institutes will open on September 1 and break off on December 5, to resume on January 6, 2005 up to April 2005. The third term starts on May 4, 2005.
