LOCAL government minister Tarsis Kabwegyere has vowed to end the rot in district tender boards.

Kabwegyere said a lot of money and resources are wasted by inefficient boards.
He was closing a two-day training workshop for district chairpersons and mayors in Kampala yesterday.

He accused district leaders of failing to perform their supervisory role and approving shoddy work.

“Everyone is crying about tenders. Where tenders have improperly been awarded to wrong people or companies, the prices quoted have been exorbitant. If persons whose duty is to supervise works approve shoddy work for full payments, what are we supposed to do?” Kabwegyere asked.

He said graft in the tendering process had cost the government a lot of money.
He said some district bosses collude with companies and individuals to defraud the government.

“I know dirty things about some of you because in the ministry, we get all sorts of information about you and what you are doing out there, but I will not say it now,” he added.

He advised them to diversify sources of income for their districts and attract more investment to reduce dependence on the Government.
