THE Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Iranian National chamber of Commerce last week. The agreement is meant to improve on trade relations between the two countries, reports Peter Kaujju.

Zaitun Kigongo the UNCCI president, signed for Uganda, while Naghi Khamoushi signed for the Iranians.

This is a follow-up of talks held between the two parties during September 2003 in Kampala.

“We in Uganda need to learn from the experience of the Iranian chamber on how to undertake competitive international business, understand and apply business negotiation skills and learn the best practices in the international trade, notably production and supply chain requirements,” Kigongo said.

The grounds of cooperation will include agriculture, petrochemical down-stream industries and joint ventures in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) among others.

“Officials of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines have taken this step due to the region’s long-term relations with Iran. And we intend to resume deep trade, economic and industrial ties with East African countries,” Naghi Khamoushi the head of the Iranian delegation said.

Richard Nduhhura, a state minister for trade, said the step taken by Iran is a very big one and encouraged them to take on more available business opportunities in Uganda.

“Indeed trade between Uganda and Iran is still minimal yet the potential is enormous. So I hope this initiative will boost activity between the two countries,” Nduhuura said.

One notable focus of future Iranian investments, is setting up a tractor assembly plant in Uganda.
