FORMER internal affairs minister Eriya Kategaya yesterday lashed out at what he called a “new political culture of lies and personal attacks on perceived and presumed political enemies.”

He was reacting to a page 1 story in The New Vision yesterday which quoted Maj. Roland Kakooza Mutale as saying that Kategaya and former presidential candidate Col. Kizza Besigye plotted to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni in 1993.

“What has happened to the old practice of handling political matters with decency and dignity?” Kategaya asked in a letter to The New Vision.

He said in 1993 he had been National Political Commissar for three years and wondered how Kalangala Action Plan, which was formed in 2000 was supposed to stop the coup.

He said he was, however, “not surprised that such a blatant and naked lie is coming from Mr Kakooza Mutale, knowing him as I do for a long time.”
