The Mango Kobs, LG Rhinos, Saracens and Sailors all won, but the referees almost lost it as the Barclays Sevens Circuit kicked off with the first round at the Kyadondo RFC pitch on Saturday.
In a prelude to what looks like to be a very competitive season, tempers occasionally flared, and at the end club officials confronted the referees and demanded for an explanation.
“I don’t think those complaints were really justified,” Arthur Mugweri, chairman of the referees association, said.
“There were some mistakes yes, but they affected everybody, not just particular clubs. The boys worked the whole day, and they were tired, but I don’t think they did that badly. Any referee would make the same mistakes given the circumstances.”
It was a day that saw MTN Heathens lose the Kyadondo Sevens for the first time, their second side Buffaloes reached the finals of the main Cup, and a rebuilt LG Rhinos beat perennial third-place finishers Black Pirates, to lift the Plate.
Actions in the 2004 Bell Larger Rugby League starts next week with the Heathens hosting Rhino, Kobs take on Buffaloes, Pirates travel to Makerere.
