Ajambo in search of regional gold

IRENE Ajambo, Uganda’s only weightlifting medallist at the All Africa Games in Abuja last year, will be part of the team fighting to defend the East African weightlifting trophy, which they won last year.

Norman Katende reports that this year’s championship is due March 25 in Dar es Salaam.
Ajambo (right), a Jinja based weightlifter in the 69-weight category, will be part of the 12-man contingent, which was named after the national selections held in Buziga on Sunday.

Another rising star Moses Kimbowa, gold medallist in an international meet in Manchester last year, is also on the team. Enterprising Ismail Katamba was dropped.
“His performance was not encouraging. We are going to call others to start training at Nakivubo soon,” said national weightlifting coach Ali Kavuma yesterday.

Mubarak Kivumbi (56kg), Moses Kimbowa (62kg), Noah Ssubi (69kg), Badru Namujje (77kg), Godfrey Baligeya (85kg), God Ssentamu (94kg), Abuba Munyandida (105kg), Haula Nakiganda (48kg), Fauzia Namubiru (63kg), Irene. Ajambo (69kg) and Mariam Nabubanga (75kg).
