KITGUM — The Minister of State for Education in Charge of Sports, Henry Oryem, has banned the transfer of secondary school teachers outside the district. The minister was addressing Kitgum Muslim community during the Idi-Adhuha celebration recently. He said replacing teachers in the region was difficult.

Body donates
LIRA — An Italian NGO has donated sh1m to the victims of Abia displaced camp admitted at Lira Referral Hospital to help them get food while on treatment. Giving the donation recently, Rev. Fr. Sabbath Ayelle, called upon the international community to help end the war and rehabilitate the victims.

RDC appeals
APAC — Amuka, a local militia group, will recruit more 1,000 personnel, to help the UPDF fight the rebels, said Mary Owor, the resident district commissioner. Owor was addressing a gathering at Boma Grounds recently. She asked civilians from all sub-counties to consider joining the Amuka. Over 5,000 recruits were recently passed out.

Property lost
PADER — Only 20 schools are now operating in Pader district against a population of 112,000 pupils, said Willie Opimo, the acting district education officer. He was last week giving an analysis of education in a workshop held at Lira Hotel. He said over 20 teachers were murdered, 600 pupils abducted and at least 40 pupils murdered. Opimo said over 150 primary schools lost all their scholastic items.

Cleric decries
GULU — The Bishop of Northern Uganda Diocese, Rt. Rev. Nelson Onono Onweng, has decried the high rate of HIV/AIDS infection among the youth. Speaking recently from his Gulu home, Onono blamed the scourge on the insurgency, which he said had not given time to the youth to adjust their lives.

Low progress
PADER — Development projects in the district stalled due to insecurity. Willie Opimo, the acting district education officer, was last week presenting a situation analysis during an inter-regional education emergency workshop at Lira Hotel.
