THE Electoral Commissioner in charge of the northern region, Tom Buruku, has said the local council (LC) election exercises in the north could be interrupted by the commission’s indebtedness.

He told a press conference on Wednesday that the commission owed sh3.5b to people who worked under various capacities as electoral officials during the last parliamentary and LC elections.

Flanked by the commission’s principal public relations officer, Jabweli Okello, he said Pader district demanded sh17m, Kitgum sh57m and Arua sh172m.

“There is a likely problem of not being able to convince people to work for us when they have not yet been paid for their previous efforts. Normally people are encouraged to work with those who value and recognise their services but as per today we seem not to be trusted anymore,” Buruku said.Ends
