CHARLIE Lubega may have registered a routine win in the Mbarara rally at the weekend but the margin between him and the season’s revelation, Riyaz Kurji, has reduced tremendously.

That Lubega beat Kurji by only three minutes a single misfortune like a puncture could have seen him fall to the newcomer.

And Lubega is bracing for a tough battle with Kurji in the MOSAC rally next month.

“I am very impressed with Riyaz’s pace, his win is not far away. We were beating the Lumalas by the same margin. I pray that Kuku gets a better car and it will be more exciting,” Lubega said.

Lubega extended his national championship lead to 200 points, 50 ahead of Kuku Ranjit. Despite finishing third overall, Kuku reaped 75 NRC points because Kurji was not eligible to score NRC points.

Kurji, a Clubman Rally Championship (CRC) driver has now amassed enough seeding points to move to NRC in the next event.

“It feels nice performing well but I am still learning. I took it easy in the last section because I knew I could not catch up with him,” Kurji said.
