The Uganda Bikers Association (UBA) AIDS awareness and fundraising ride has received a sh54m Mitsubishi pickup from General Machinery Group of Companies.

Twelve UBA riders will on February 28 embark on a 5,500-kilometre ride from South Africa. They would go through Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya.

Michael Kiiza, an official at General Machinery said at the hand over recent statistics showed that the world could not ignore the AIDS scourge.

“Last year in Africa, 10 times as many people killed in conflicts died from HIV/AIDS,” Kiiza said.

He asked for increased support to organisations fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS.

UBA chairman, Bernie Runnebaum hailed General Machinery for their donation.

“We hope to raise sh150m and want to donate the money to children whose parents died of AIDS,” he said.

He said they would use a computer presentation to describe to the people of various communities how Uganda has handled the pandemic.

This is the second international ride being organised by UBA.

Last year, they organised a ride that covered the three East African countries.

The sh9.1m that was raised from the event was donated to the “Reach Out” HIV/AIDS programmes of Mbuya's Parish.

Kiiza said the vehicle would enhance their ability to achieve their objective with maximum impact.
