‘Discard bride price’

KAMPALA— The chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Margaret Ssekajja, has said the practice of payment of bride price is illegal and should be scrapped to protect the rights of women.

Ssekajja was recently addressing women activists at Makerere University. She said the practice could be challenged in the Constitutional Court.

‘Put off TV fees plan’

KAMPALA — The Uganda Consumers Protection Association has said the recent announcement of an annual sh10,000 fee per television set should be halted.

The executive director, Sam Watasa, said the move by the Broadcasting Council to charge viewers was only intended to keep the ‘poor’ members of the public off the TV. He said sh10,000 was high for the majority poor.

Cops swoop nets 100

KAMPALA — One hundred suspected idlers, among them 31 sex workers, were rounded up in a series of Police swoops in the city over the weekend. The figure also included seven suspected fraudsters and eight beggars, the Police said. Central Police Station chief Steven Kasiima said the suspects, who were detained at the station, were picked on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
