LIRA main referral hospital will cut down essential drug procurement following a sh200m slash in its drug budget for 2003/04.

This comes at a time when the hospital is already facing drug shortages due to an influx of patients.

The hospital director, Dr. Peter Kusolo, told the social services committee that the drug budget was also affected by the depreciation of the shilling.

The committee debating the health sector budgetary provision on Monday said the hospital’s budget should be raised.

“Given the influx, Lira’s budget should be increased.

The hospital had asked for sh300m in its budget but was given sh200m.

The committee chairperson, Christine Atyam, said money for drugs can not be cut to such an extent without a substantive reason.

The committee agreed to use sh1m out of sh200m allocated to train nurses, saying the ministry should not concentrate on training when the health centres lack facilities.
