SIR— I am inviting the public in general and Makerereans in particular to debate the issue of Makerere University pegging salary to performance. Is it not time for the salaries to be pegged to performance and qualifications?

SIR— I am inviting the public in general and Makerereans in particular to debate the issue of Makerere University pegging salary to performance. Is it not time for the salaries to be pegged to performance and qualifications?

For example, should an assistant lecturer in the department of biochemistry, who supervises day-long experiments every week, earn the same salary as his counterpart in history, where no single experiment is supervised?

Should a senior lecturer in, say, in Medicine who teaches day, evening and often at night be in the same salary scale as his/her counterpart in Mass Communication? Should a lecturer with two degrees (e.g. BSc and MSc) earn the same as another with a PhD?
