AS campaigns for the Bushenyi Woman MP by-election close today, one of the five candidates, Juliet Kyomugisha Ntwirenabo, is being investigated by the Electoral Commission (EC) over academic qualifications.

In another twist, three other candidates have threatened to pull out of the race if alleged ISO agents are not withdrawn from the district by mid-day today.
The Electoral Commission yesterday denounced the electoral violence in Bushenyi in which a district counsellor for Kyamuhunga sub-county, Emmanuel Ndyakira, was shot on Monday night.
“He is not dead. But the Electoral Commission condemns any form of violence or intimidation during the electoral process. We hope that the Police bring the culprits to book,” the EC chairperson, Badru Kiggundu, told a delayed news conference in Kampala.

Kiggundu, flanked by other EC commissioners, revealed that security is to be tightened for the February 27 polls. “The Commission is working closely with the Police to ensure that elections take place in a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Persons who could be harbouring the intention of disrupting elections or disturbing public peace or harassing voters are warned to desist from such acts or face the full force of the law,” Kiggundu said.

He pledged that electoral materials would be delivered to polling stations in time for the elections. He also said the EC would set up a complaints/information desk at the district headquarters.

“Aggrieved parties, candidates and individuals are urged to make use of this facility. We appeal to the candidates and people to shun violence and other electoral malpractices, now and even after polling day,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Maclean Kyamutetera, Sarah Bireete and Harriet Mushega yesterday wrote to the returning officer asking President Yoweri Museveni to “recall all his officials who are disrupting the on going exercise.”
