THE Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has killed 146 Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in different engagements in Lira and Pader districts in three days.

The acting 5th Division commander, Lt. Col. George Etyang, said this on Tuesday while briefing President Yoweri Museveni, who has camped in Lira district to oversee the UPDF offensive against the LRA rebels.
He said the UPDF killed 92 LRA rebels between February 18-20.
Etyang said the UPDF rescued 302 abducted people, while 56 LRA rebels defected and 15 surrendered.

He said the army recovered 10 anti-tank mines, a 12.7mm anti-aircraft, two light machine guns, two mortars and 10 60mm mortar shells.
Etyang said three rocket-propelled guns, two G2 rifles, three B10 field guns and 65 head of cattle were also recovered.

He said the army was pursuing the Odhiambo and Raska Lokwiya groups between rivers Orama and Agago.
The groups are believed to have been behind last Saturday’s attack on Barlonyo internally displaced (IDP)camp in Lira district.
“We hope to catch up with the killers by the end of this month.

They will have to pay for their crimes”, a visibly angry Etyang said.
The 4th Division commander, Col. Nathan Mugisha, said the army was pursuing pockets of LRA rebels under Dominic and Sam Otto.
He said intelligence reports indicated the rebels intended to disrupt traffic on the Gulu-Kampala highway.
