THE Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has urged industries to establish measures for treatment of toxic wastes to curb the pollution of Lake Victoria.
This was in a speech read at the of launching of a sh7b waste-water treatment plant at Uganda Breweries, Luzira, by Mwesigwa Rukutana, the state minister for economic planning.

The effluent treatment plant, which is expected to reduce pollution of Lake Victoria, will be operational by November this year.
Bukenya said, “It is vital that all companies within in Uganda assess the impact they make on the environment and dispose off their waste in an environmentally sensitive manner.’’

Dr. Aryamanya Mugisha, who heads the National Environment Management Authority, recently said polluting industries were obliged not to exceed certain limits. He said they had negotiated with various industries and entered compliance agreements.
UBL boss Chris Emptage said the plant would treat waste water to meet national and globally recognised standards.

He said they were committed to the cause, adding that the company’s policy was to operate in an environmentally responsible way.
