THE Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said signing the protocol setting up a customs union for the East African community will bring competitiveness and stimulate export growth of Ugandan products.

“It paves the way for an export-oriented market in Uganda that will capture a market of 90 million people in East Africa and explore other avenues of penetrating markets in the COMESA region. It is important therefore, that the Ugandan business community takes time to develop joint ventures, mergers, partnerships and franchises within the region to be in a better position to compete financially,” said Michael Ntabaazi, UNCCI’s public relations manager in a statement issued yesterday.

The statement said the signing of the customs union protocol was a landmark success, which opened borders of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania to regional competitiveness and gave Uganda an opportunity to develop and strengthen the export industry.

It also said in penetrating the export market, Ugandan businesses would have a chance to focus on product improvement, quality, packaging and cutting down on the costs of production.

Ntabaazi said UNCCI fully supported the customs union.
