THREE Ssese Islands, Bukasa, Bugaba and Mbugwe, are to be turned into a tourism attraction, including viewing of over 1,000 bird species.
The plan also includes protection of wild animals like the statungas (enjobe).
Visitors will also get a chance to see the Nanziri waterfalls.
“Here we are planning to not to tamper with the natural forest, but construction of a guest house will definitely take place,” Col Andrew Lutaaya currently in-charge of the project said recently.
Lutaaya recently hosted the deputy Katikkiro, Godfrey Kaaya, UIA officials Dr. William Kalema and Dr. Maggie Kigozi to the islands.
“Our brother who is in United States, Fred Kaganda, is the one funding the project. We started with construction of a sh500m airstrip that has already been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority for fulfiling international standards,” he said.
“We have bought a speedboat at $300,000, two small boats and we are intending to purchase an aeroplane that will be stationed here and leaves every morning for the mainland at Entebbe,” he said.
“So this means that one can reside here and leave early in the morning for business in Kampala and return in the evening in a drive that takes 20 minutes from here to Entebbe,” he said.
He said the Uganda Wildlife Authority is to train game scouts, who will handle the animals and also to provide some more animals including Impala.
“The youth here spend time fishing to get money for drinking but the project will make them more productive by growing fruits and vegetables both for the guest house, lodge and the tourists,” Lutaaya said. Ends
