THE Irish Government has hailed the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme in Uganda as the most successful in Africa.

The Irish ambassador, Martin O’Fainin, recently said no country in Africa had made such progress in universal education.

O’Fainin, who was inspecting primary schools funded by the Irish government, was addressing local leaders at Rukoki in Kasese.

He said Ireland had ear-marked over sh6b to support education in Uganda.

O’Fainin advised Uganda to invest in education.

He expressed concern that the children in war-torn northern Uganda were not benefiting from the UPE programme.

The district education officer, Douglas Katemba, said Kasese had received sh2.3b from the Irish embassy since 1999.
