GEORGE MUKOYA, a carpenter with the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) recently received a cheque of sh10,882,045 as compensation for losing his fingers in an accident.

A Statewide Insurance Company Limited (SWICO) senior manager, Emmanuel Mumira, handed over the cheque last week. Mukoya had his accident with a horizontal circular saw on January 11, 2002.

“Normal compensations take between two to four weeks, but this one delayed. The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development had to compute the figures effectively while the medical personnel had to approve all injuries, so for him he has been assessed by the relevant authorities and compensated 100%,” Mumira said.

“The Workers Compensation policy is very important because it encourages workers because they know that they are protected,” is all what Mukoya said.
