District chairpersons have been warned against influencing the awarding of tenders.

In a letter addressed to the district chairpersons recently, the Minister of Local Government, Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, said “I have received many reports that the constructed UPE buildings, health units and other structures around the country are of poor quality.”

He said nepotism and personal interests influenced tender board appointments.

“l am disappointed to note that the majority of the district councils are appointing tender boards whose members cannot do the work well,” Kabwegyere said.

Kabwegyere said shoddy work should be identified such that payments are halted until defects are rectified.

Meanwhile, the Inspectorate of Government has stopped the construction of three gravity water schemes in Kabale, alleging the tenders were wrongfully awarded.

The projects were in Nyamugoma (Kaharo), Kanyakwanzi (Bubare) and Kahama in Buhara sub-county.
The inspectorate has forwarded the matter to Kabwegyere.
