TANZANIAN pugilist Aswald Maneno famed for punching Ugandan Godfrey Nyakana back to retirement last December, is expected in Kampala this morning for an Africa title fight against another Ugandan on Saturday.

Maneno, 33, will be up against a much younger, strong, aggressive and undefeated Badru Lusambya, 22, for the Africa Boxing Union/IBF Africa welterweight at Nakivubo stadium. The pre-fight press conference will be held today at10.45 am at Nakivubo.

December 13, 2003, is a day that many Ugandan-boxing fans would love to forget, when Maneno broke many hearts after he sent ill-prepared KCC councillor Nyakana reeling on the canvas, and back into his second retirement from professional boxing.

Lusambya, ranked 8th in Africa, has promised to salvage Uganda’s boxing pride when he slugs it out with Maneno ranked 9th in a 12-round Africa Boxing Union/IBF Africa welterweight title fight dubbed “The Strike on Maneno”.
Maneno is currently holder of the IBF Africa belt.

The fight will also determine the number one contender for the Commonwealth welterweight title.

Lusambya, whose record stands at six wins, five of which are knockouts just within the distance, says a big surprise awaits the Tanzanian.
“He is a fighter, not a boxer. In the ring he attacks you in a straight line. I know how to handle him,” said a confident Lusambya at his training base at KBC gym.

The fight, promoted by Gobtex International will feature Adams Katumwa, 26, against highly ranked Zambian John Chibuta in a 10-round fight in defence of his ABU super welterweight title.

Exciting Peter Semo “Boyz Boyz”, 23, will trade punches with another little known but highly ranked Zambian Mathew Chifumpeni for the African lightweight title ahead of the main fight.
